Newmarket, historic headquarters of horse racingNewmarket 100 miles 2003

Saturday July 26th and Sunday July 27th, 2003

At the Rowley Mile Racecourse in Newmarket, the Surrey Walking Club, aided by Peter Selby and Ron Wallwork hosted the 2003 Centurion race. The track led around the Millenium Grandstand and up and down the lane to the Racecourse. There were a lot of participants, making this one of the most successful Centurion races in years.

Rowley Mile Racecourse logoThe race started at 2 in the afternoon in sunny, warm weather. During the evening and night, the walkers endured a lot of rain, sometimes flooding the roads on the track. Later that night, the rain stopped and at dawn the temperature started to go up again.

As seen in the results, there were 17 new Centurions (amongst which 1 French, 3 Belgian and 4 Dutch walkers). The RWV team from Rotterdam beat the LAT team from Amsterdam by a narrow margin. Not as narrow as the first place however. Peter Ryan, having a difficult last lap, almost lost his entire lead on Willem Mutze (finishing only 55 seconds later).

Peter received the Hew Neilson trophy for best new Centurion. The McNeir trophy for best over 65 was won by Jaap Visser. Unaware of their unique position, John Searson and Wendy Watson took numbers 999 and 1000. Still, we will have to wait untill next year (probably at King’s Lynn, see map) to meet the 1000th Centurion (who will receive number 1002).

72 people started the race, only 31 made it, giving us 17 new Centurions. Congratulations.
