Isle Of Man Centurion 100 Mile/24 Hours Walk

August 19^th and 20^th, 2006

National Sports Centre, Douglas, Isle Of Man

Many Dutch and Belgian walkers started their vacation trip, including a Centurion event, a few days before the event. Travelling by minivan, train or airplane to the Isle Of Man, some also visited Hever Castle near London on their way to the island and Canterbury and Dover on their way back home. This trip was organized by Theo Tromp, vice-chairman of O.L.A.T., one of the main Dutch (race) walking clubs.

From Liverpool, most Dutch walkers took a trip by Seacat to Douglas, where many would stay in St. Helliers hotel on the sea shore. The very friendly hotel owners had to put up with the sometimes annoying Dutch team, who did not know how to order breakfast... Furthermore, supporter and Centurion Gerrit de Jong would wreck his bed accidentally and team leader, supporter and Centurion Theo Tromp would almost take several room keys with him on the boat back to Heysham after the weekend.

Below is the map of the Isle Of Man, with the famous TT-track in red. Race walking venue was in Douglas (although planned in Ramsey for some time) at the National Sports Centre.

The day before the race, many of the walkers made a tour around the island by steam train, bus and electric tram. Visits were made to Peel, Castletown, the Great Laxey Wheel and Sneafell hill. Most travelled in a group, except for Gerrit de Jong, who lost his way in Castletown and missed the bus to Peel.

The island turned out to be very beautiful and everybody agreed it was just too much to view in just one day. On the photo site of Theo Tromp (links below) several pictures of our tour can be seen and hopefully soon photographs from other walkers (Ties van de Berg and Erik Dikken) will become available.
